Dr Mace is a locally trained specialist anaesthetist. Following undergraduate medical degree in New Zealand, he moved to Australia and completed residency and anaesthesia training in Western Australia. Dr Mace has undertaken subspecialty fellowships in obstetric anaesthesia (King Edward Memorial Hospital), retrieval medicine (Royal Flying Doctor Service WA) and liver transplant anaesthesia (University of Toronto, Canada).

Dr Mace's practice is shared across the public and private health sectors. He holds a public appointment at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals where he is involved in anaesthesia for upper gastrointestinal and liver surgery, and obstetric anaesthesia, and also practices acute pain medicine. He holds a Clinical Senior Lecturer position at the University of Western Australia.

Dr Mace's clinical interests include anaemia management, transfusion (and its alternatives) and perioperative coagulation. Dr Mace directs the pre-operative anaemia screening and smoking cessation programmes at Fiona Stanley and is heavily involved in teaching and research
